Fifteen days ago my friend asked me if I had ever written any love songs for Jesus. I told them all my songs are love songs to Jesus! “Are you sure they’re not all theological or songs about God’s love for you?” they responded. I looked through repertoire and realized they were right! ![]()
In that moment, I decided to marry my interest in the Song of Songs with a musical project that would be full of love songs for Jesus. Yes, from a scholarly perspective the Song of Songs is ancient Hebrew erotic love poetry, but followers of God throughout the ages have oddly reflected on it as an allegory between Israel and their Messiah, God’s love, the love between Christ and the church, and so on. So which interpretation is right? Erotic literature or spiritual allegory? To that, I answer, “Yes.” And for that reason, I think this album can be listened to in both directions.
I haven’t had this much fun recording an album in a long time. I did my best to use almost all the lyrics straight from the Song itself, which led me into some intriguing musical twists and turns. Most freeing of all, this album feels very much like me. I didn’t try to write songs that could be sung in church or tried to match a certain audience or sound. Hope you enjoy!
