Question: Does it really matter when the Sabbath is or when we have church? Ex: 7th day Adventist have church on Saturday but the rest of us don’t
I faced this issue for the first time at a giant festival in Chicago where there was a guy with a poster that condemned everyone for choosing the wrong day to practice the Sabbath.
Maybe I’m just not very liturgical, but I don’t understand this issue at all as it feels trivial to me. Jewish laws like the Sabbath were implemented to instruct us, teach us, and keep our hearts in the right place. When we get so hung up on the specific day that we think people might go to Hell for resting on the wrong day, I think we’ve missed the heart of the law.
In the Old Testament, this would have been an important discussion as it brought unity to the Jewish faith. But I don’t personally sense it in the same way in the New Testament and I’m unsure how good the new Gentile believers were at practicing the Sabbath in general.
For a great book that will make you appreciate the Sabbath, check out Jewish scholar Abraham Joshua Heschel’s book, “The Sabbath.”
That being said, should you want to get historically deeper, check out Justo Gonzalez’s book, A Brief History of Sunday.
