I’m at that age where new music doesn’t impress me like it used to, but still check every Friday to see what’s come out and give it a listen. That being said, here’s a few albums that stood out to me this year.

pure – Abbie Gamboa

Abbie Gamboa’s album, pure, is easily one of the best worship albums I’ve heard in years. While it’s not necessarily congregational, it’s perfect for home. The lyrics are wonderful and the genre matches it perfectly. This one gets a huge stamp of approval from me.

The Secret Language of Trees – BT

BT has long held a special place in my heart and musical journey. I didn’t know what musical creativity and expertise was until I discovered his music. This particular album is a spiritual successor to my favorite album of all time, This Binary Universe. While it’s not the same as that album, it certainly carries the same kind of creative brilliance. I highly suggest listening to all the producer’s cut versions straight through in one sitting.

Take Me Back EP – Jonathan Ogden

Jonathan Ogden makes some smooth worship jams, lyrically grounded in Scripture and creative in chord progressions. It stands out among blasé worship. My personal favorite track on this EP is “To Know You.”

And Be With You – Colorvault

Colorvault has a creative electronic-rock sound that is rarely found in Christian music. All of their music is well worth a listen.

The Beautiful Letdown (Our Version) – Switchfoot

The Beautiful Letdown is one of my favorite albums of all time. This year, they recreated it piece by piece. It’s a great remaster, and the little lyrical and musical changes they made here and there are acceptable. It’s a great album returned to life once more, followed by newly imagined covers of all the songs by various bands.

Deep Magic – John Mark McMillan

My favorite lyricist put out a new album this year. As usual, it’s full of McMillan’s provocative and poetic lyrics.

The Help Project – Fellowship Creative

This short EP has a fantastic sound that’s hard to define with any classic genre label. It’s worth a quick listen.

Hymns in High-Fidelity – sxxnt.

Lofi music seems to be nearly all I listen to these days. It’s chill simplicity helps me get a lot of work done as it plays in the background. Check out this artist for some great lofi remixes of worship songs.

Slow Renaissance – Josh Gauton

A pleasant, atmospheric worship album.

Awake – Austin Koukal

It’s hard to put the genre of this album into words. Hence why I like it. The more creative, the better.

Song of Songs – Jamin Bradley

I released a new concept album this year, which was my favorite project to record since I created Of Lampposts and Lions many years ago.
