If the giants existed before the flood and the flood reached the highest peak of the mountains, how were there still giants after the flood? There are several answers we might propose. As a simple proposal, we might wonder if they saw what Noah was doing, took heed, and built their own boats. As a weirder, unlikely proposal, we might wonder if they had some kind of supernatural ability to survive the flood given that their fathers were spiritual beings.
The most likely answer is that the Bible writers over-embellished the details of the flood. Was there an actual flood? Sure. Several ancient cultures have such stories, as though there is a collected memory of some kind of deluge that society faced. But the Bible writers told the story on an apocalyptic scale to make theological points—the main one being that God was resetting creation to its original watery state and starting over due to how sinful the world had become. We can understand this point without having to believe that the flood was global and as high as a mountain. Ancient people had no idea there was an entire globe to explore. If the flood was localized, the giants could have fled the area once they saw Noah building his ark.
The second-best answer is a bit more unsettling. We could consider the possibility that more rebellious angels created additional giants after the flood. This suspicion seems to be seen in some of Paul’s instructions in 1 Corinthians 11 where he says some very odd things. Amongst these odd things seems to be the implication that he wanted men and women to act a certain way in their church gatherings so that angels remembered that they couldn’t have human wives.
