There’s a certain kind of, “Doesn’t matter who is president—just follow Jesus” vibe going around today. I get it. I’ve said it too. It’s good theology.
But Trump is not just another president sitting in an office, passing bills. We know his personality and how he has affected us in the past. We all have history here. While some are celebrating because of their experience of that history, many (including myself) are suffering from mental and spiritual whiplash. We fear not just who he was last time, but who he has become since then. We are confused and afraid.
The better expression is, “It does matter who is president—also, just follow Jesus.” Saying it doesn’t matter is dismissive of all those suffering in fear today. For those who couldn’t sleep last night. For those whose anxieties get the best of them and they can’t imagine anything less than a terrifying future that’s based on what they experienced last time. There is deep suffering here for many that good theology dismisses—like a pastor trying to find his best words at a funeral that still fall flat and feel hollow. Grieve with the poor in spirit, for that is where blessing is found.
It does matter.
Also, follow Jesus.
