“Hi Mama.” I wonder if the Holy Spirit (also known as the Spirit of Christ) sounded like that the first time Mary heard him speak. What a bizarre spiritual experience she would have had, being the only person in the world to carry Jesus physically in her womb and spiritually in her heart—the same voice she heard around the house resonating in her mind after the resurrection.
The scene plays out like a movie. There, she sits in an empty house when a voice from within calls out for her attention. It sounds like her son, not just in tenor, but also in personality. Like a parent hearing a phantom cry when the baby spent the night with the grandparents, she looks around for him, just to remember he’s been resurrected.
Jesus told us that his sheep know his voice. While those who knew him in the flesh would have experienced this dynamic in an extra surreal way, all Christians have the ability (indeed, the duty) to learn what his voice sounds like. As we practice listening over the years, we will eventually learn to recognize the same voice. May we grow so close to Jesus that we experience the phantom noises as well.
