Scholars say that the concept of resurrection is hardly found in the Old Testament, but Jesus seemed to feel differently. For example, the Sadducees didn’t believe in resurrection and only held the first five books of the Bible as sacred, yet Jesus thought they still had reason to believe in resurrection from those books alone. Therefore, we should expect to come across the concept here and there if we’re open to it.
One of the places where I see resurrection in the Old Testament is in God’s promise to Abraham, where he tells Abraham that he will have as many descendants as sand on the seashore and stars in the sky. Perhaps we might see in this statement the idea that Abraham’s descendants will be made of earth and heaven alike. After all, in the ancient world, stars were a part of the heavens. And because they flickered and moved around, they were considered sentient, living beings. In the Hebrew mind, they were Sons of God—the angels.
This might take us back to Jesus’ statements to the Sadducees that in the resurrection, we will be like the angels.
Here’s a song that I wrote that mentions this thought.
