“I know, my son, I know,” said Jacob as he comforted a confused Joseph. Jacob was breaking cultural tradition by extending the typical blessing of the firstborn to Joseph’s secondborn. This went against all the rules. Had Grandpa finally lost it in his old age?

No. After many decades of missing the point, Jacob was actually finally starting to get it. His God played by different rules. His God lifted up the lower ones in society. His God blessed everyone, including the firstborn.

No longer did Jacob need to try to steal the blessings of others or try to make his way up in the world. No longer did he have to try to get ahead. He could simply trust in his God to take care of him while he aimed to be faithful.

Joseph should have been able to look at his own life to see this as well. Now it was his sons’ turn. Hopefully they would learn the lesson quicker and not make the same mistakes.
