Once I became an adult and realized I could go to the movie theater and eat a bucket of popcorn whenever I wanted, I started doing so. That being said, I frequent the theater often. Here were my favorite movies of 2024!

10. Wonka

A delightfully charming musical with a vibrant set and cinematography.

10. Dune Part 2

Admittedly, I didn’t love Dune: Part 1. It’s not that it was a bad movie; it just more or less felt like “space politics,” which is not my favorite sci-fi genre. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised when Part 2 had me very engaged. Great characters, plot, twists—and awesome cinematography as well.

9. Argylle

If you like the Kingsmen movies, you’ll love this one. It’s filled with the same kind of creative and ridiculous action choreography and has a great plot to keep you questioning what’s happening.

7. Cabrini

As I sat down to watch what I thought would be a secular movie about a Catholic saint, the words “Angel Studios” came up on the screen. Having grown up in the world of atrociously bad Christian movies, I immediately panicked. As a pastor, I can’t stand the ways that many such movies often present the world and tell the Christian story. But it seems that some Christian movies are finally taking a turn, like this one. Cabrini was a powerful movie about a nun who forced herself into a man’s world to address social justice issues like racism, healthcare, and caring for orphans. It’s a clever story about how one woman engaged her community in ways that effected her city, and eventually the world.

6. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Apparently, Christian movies are getting good enough that two of them appeared on my top 10 list this year. I’ve watched this movie several times and cried each time. It’s a simple tale about a traditional church that finds itself engaging a bunch of kids from a broken family. From calling out the church on their judgment, to reaching the least of these—it pulls on my pastoral heartstrings in every way. And somehow it does so in such a comedic way that everyone can hear the message.

5. The Wild Robot

The Wild Robot was my favorite animated movie of 2024. The story is moving, the soundtrack is powerful, and the comedic moments are hilarious.

4. Wicked

I have a problem where I don’t want to like things everyone else likes, but there’s nothing I can do about it here. Wicked is clearly popular for a reason. The music is stellar and the lead actresses nail their parts.

3. Fall Guy

I went to see this movie with little expectation and I was blown away. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen any movie aim for action, comedy, and romance and nail all three genres so well. This movie is worth your time.

2. Alien Romulus

This is my new favorite movie in the Alien franchise. It feels like every single scene serves a purpose, and it’s artfully put together. These are not statements that can be made about many horror sci-fi movies.

1. Watchers

People hated this movie for some reason, but it was my favorite movie of the year. Not only is it a good thriller that constantly has you wondering what’s really going on, but it plays into some of my favorite lore in the Bible—though it does so more from a Norse perspective. My favorite movie of the year.
