The Greek word for sorcery is pharmakeia. In reading that, you’re probably already thinking about a pharmacy or pharmaceuticals, right? That is appropriate, seeing as how pharmakeia was often seen as a form of sorcery that used drugs. As one commentary explains,

In classical Greek pharmakeia referred to the use of drugs whether for medicinal or more sinister purposes, e.g., poisoning. In the New Testament, however, it is invariably associated with the occult, both here in Galatians [5:20] and in Revelation, where it occurs twice (Rev 9:21; 18:23). English translations usually render pharmakeia as “witchcraft” (KJV, NIV) or “sorcery” (RSV, NEB). These words correctly convey the idea of black magic and demonic control, but they miss the more basic meaning of drug use. In New Testament times pharmakeia in fact denoted the use of drugs with occult properties for a variety of purposes including, especially, abortion. (George, Timothy. The New American Commentary: Galatians. Edited by David S Dockery, vol. 30, Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1994, p. 394.)

Furthermore, according to the Jewish mindset found in 1 Enoch 7:1, the rebellious sons of God who took up human wives in Genesis 6, taught humans “charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants.” Therefore, this popular Jewish book (which our own Bible even references theologically at times) shows us that the Jews didn’t think drug use and sorcery were created out of nowhere, but were taught to us by fallen spiritual beings—all the more reason God would forbid such practices.

Now we all know that drugs have scientific effects on us. By no means do I think taking drugs (even illegal or sorcery-related drugs) therefore automatically guarantees some kind of demonic experience; nor do I think the drugs that doctors prescribe to us are bad—but I would suggest that there is, at times, more connection between drug use and spiritual engagement than we often give credit for. And in that light, I think we can see that even enlightened minds are still chasing after and desiring something spiritual.

Whether recreational, mind-altering drugs become legal or not in our state, the Christian is to stay away from them for spiritual reasons like those above. We do not need drugs to have an experience with the Holy Spirit. We often need to create an intentional space to hear his quiet voice, but we don’t need the assistance of drugs to do it. We can’t force the Holy Spirit to speak if he does not want to, and any drugs that might engage us in the spiritual realm could be setting us up for danger.

As Christians, we may not always know where science ends and the spiritual begins in drug experiences. Still, great caution is necessary as we don’t want to give ourselves over to the fascination of the occult. Wait upon the Lord in sober prayer and let the Holy Spirit be in charge of what spiritual reality you can and can’t have access to. Don’t try to force your way into the spiritual by your own means.

      1. Henry Lindlahr (Philosophy of natural Therapeutics) teaches us that by far the main cause of disease is breaking nature’s laws. You could say, breaking God’s laws.

Now, doctors take the Hippocratic oath, which says do no harm. And Hippocrates was all about understanding nature’s laws, firstly about the cause of disease (not lack of caffeine in the case of fatigue, or lack of aspirin in the case of headache), and also about the natural healing process itself. Work with respect for nature’s laws, your patient may not always be completely cured, but he will never be harmed.

The tempting offer of pharmaceuticals is in opposition to the Hippocratic way, in that it promises to simply drive disease out of the body, make it go away. No need for the patient to change anything. This is obviously not a strategy for healing, it is a strategy for dependence on medications and worsening health. At best it helps the patient to feel okay while their problems go unresolved.

In my book (Missing Links in Healing: a new-old approach for a chaotic world, by Kuno van der Post), I explain that we cannot take short cuts to health and expect to be healthy. And we see the proof in real cases – a person who believes they need a drug to be healthy soon becomes somebody who needs two, then three, but is never healthy.

I think it crystal clear that pharmaceuticals defy nature’s laws, unashamedly. The clue is in the name – pharmacy, sorcery. In six foot high neon writing they offer magical results that defy the laws of physics and common sense.

The human body is not weak and flawed and simply needing better science to fix it. The human form is perfect, but it is suffering. And in its suffering it is telling us what we need to know in order to get right. It is up to us to listen.

  3. the word occult just means things unknown or hidden. If Jesus is your Lord, the Holy Spirit will teach you all truth & knowledge, including what is hidden. Now, to use drugs or other sources than the Holy Spirit, I believe is wrong. Scripture tells us that no one can say Jesus Christ is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. God desires that personal relationship & for further spiritual meat to be eaten, than milk for infants. He wants you to grow with Him. Some of the issue is many being scared of the unknown or other believers ripping brothers & sisters down. Much of modern Christianity have become much like the pharisees & hypocrites. They are religious or apostate. Just like the days of Rome, when christ came, is the same before His coming again. It’s also about intent. Will you use what God gives you for only yourself or for edification & encouraging others? We want to walk with God & share with others. The righteous will live by faith in Jesus & may practice lovely, spiritual practices, in the name of Christ. If others do not have the same measure of faith, I will not mock, but I notice I don’t get that same respect back. Other believers call you crazy, but that is what faith will make you appear to others. As long as you know you’re part of the Body & doing His will, don’t let anyone try a tear your faith down. Pray for the religious & apostate, so they may come to truly know the Savior.

The occult does mean hidden. But its always satanic. pretty well every occult secret society is luciferian at the higher levels and many members will also be members of other secret societies and they all work together especially in the higher degrees to manipulate the world towards their new world order. Even when you look at the new age movement it stems from the Theosophical society which is luciferian. If Jesus is your lord your not supposed to partake in divination, necromancy, witchcraft, sorcery (although i do) or numerology, and your not supposed to believe any other religions or that would be idolatry. Your not supposed to be partaking in any demonic rituals or believing or opening yourself up to any spiritual phenomena out side of the bible because it is demonic. Christians warn to stay away from the occult for a reason. And the hidden is hidden for a reason usually its because its evil.

The occult does mean hidden. But its hidden for a reason because its evil. If Jesus is your Lord your not supposed to partake in meditation, divination, necromancy, sorcery (though i do still ), witchcraft, idolatry, numerology or summoning demons or invoking them. And of course child sacrifice isnt allowed either not that its socially acceptable anywhere but that does happen in the occult although not in most societies only in the blatantly darker ones. And your not supposed to believe spiritual phenomena from other religions or open yourself up to it. For instance your not supposed to believe in auras or astral travel or use chi because this is demonically taught phenomena that will lead you astray and away from God. Nearly all secret societies are luciferian at the higher degrees i haven’t heard of many that actually arnt. Theres plenty of occultists who are members of multiple secret societies and its basically a network of luciferian secret societies that summon fallen angels , demons and that are practicing black magic and conspire together to manipulate the world into a luciferian world government where eventually Christians are to be rid off and killed. Even the new age movement and the majority of those belief’s comes from the theosophical society which is luciferian. The occult is evil and Christians warn to stay away from it for a reason. I had a luciferian friend who was in the Theosophical society whose dad was a freemason who was obsessed with UFOs (fallen angels) and he got me involved in the occult and introduced me to a spirit that nearly manipulated me over time into becoming a luciferian and since i looked at some evil books and mucked around with some evil people and partaken in spiritual things that god forbid me and me playing with fire has shown me things most people wouldn’t believe and has mucked with my life to the point i have been possessed, had people i love die, seen family members possessed, had my blood drunk and had things ive never told anyone told to me , being generally haunted and having to go to God to be delivered from curses and evil spirits. Im just glad God didnt let me slide to far in my waywardness and that he forgave me for my little wander .
