My professor walked through the door to teach his doctrines class just as my classmates and I were deciding whether to keep waiting for him to show up. He apologized for his tardiness and explained that he had been sitting in his office when he was hit with the love of God. I can still see the streaks of tears running down his cheeks.
He looked like glory.
Whatever we were actually supposed to learn that day was canceled. He couldn’t help but spend the next hour proclaiming the love of God. It was the single most powerful and memorable class I ever experienced in college.
I sat at the feet of Jesus that day—Jesus at work in him, reaching through his skin, out to me. What he had, I wanted. What he knew, I had to know. Whatever it was he was experiencing, it was everything.
It is this love that any doctrine worth studying revolves around. It is this love that the whole of Christianity is built to aim for. It is this love that all of existence is designed to operate in.
We settle for so many cheap imitations in search of this love. I pray we all, like Ken Brewer, find the real thing.
