Just as a “Pedro” might today introduce his name to an English-speaking person as “Peter,” so would a Hebrew “Joshua” have introduced himself to a Greek-speaking person as, “Jesus” in the New Testament era. This transliteration reminds us to focus in on the meaning of Jesus’ name as the angel communicated it to Joseph in the Christmas story.
